$165 million Northeast Community Credit Union of Elizabethton, Tenn. inked a deal to rename the local minor league baseball field after itself, following scores of other not-for-profit credit unions nationwide spending millions to slap their names on the sides of stadiums and arenas from sea-to-shining-sea.
Northeast’s CEO opined: “Pairing the winningest financial institution with the winningest team in the Appalachian League makes perfect sense.”
Alas, in 2021 Major League Baseball reorganized the Appalachian League as a summer collegiate league from freshman and sophomores. The stadium is still Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark, and the newly rebranded Elizabethton River Riders are hovering around .500 in their division.
